The birth certificate, or birth record, is the document that proves a person's birth and accompanies them throughout their life. With this certificate, for example, it is possible to access health services, enroll in school or get married.
The certificate can be issued in Portuguese or in several languages for use abroad. It is valid for six months from the date of issue.
Who can apply for a birth certificate
Any Cape Verdean citizen can apply for a birth certificate, providing their own personal details or those of the person they represent:
- Cape Verdeans residing in the country or abroad
- Legal representatives (minors, incapacitated persons)

- Valid identification document (passport or National Identification Card)
- Personal details
Cost of the birth certificate
The cost of the birth certificate varies depending on where the request is made. The amounts for requests made in Cabo Verde differ from those applicable to requests made abroad.

The multilingual certificate is issued in the formats approved by the International Convention on the Issue of Multilingual Extracts from Civil Status Records.
How to obtain a birth certificate online
You can request this service online on the portal or in the GOV.CV app. Click "Apply online" to start and follow these steps:

Indicate who the request is for
For yourself – For another person
Fill in the identification details
Provide the full name, date of birth and other required details
Finalize the request
Check and, if necessary, change the details before finalizing the request

After approval, the certificate is available in digital format (PDF), ready for download and printing.
