The National Identification Card (CNI) is the electronic identification document adopted in Cape Verde.
It allows citizens to prove their identity and securely access digital services, including authentication and digital signature features. The CNI is valid for 5 years.
Who can apply for the CNI
The CNI is mandatory for all Cape Verdean citizens from the age of 4. It may be requested by:
Cape Verdean citizens living in the country or abroad
Legal representatives (in the case of minors or incapacitated persons)
What you need to apply for the CNI
To apply for or renew the CNI, it is necessary to provide the applicant's personal information.
If the request is for a minor, attach:
- CNI authorization for minors
In case of renewal, loss or misplacement, also have:
- Valid identification document (when applicable)
- Declaration of loss, theft or misplacement (when applicable)
You must use the Biometrics GOV.CV mobile application to collect biometric data: a photograph and your signature.
Through the GOV.CV app, you can also schedule a video conference with an employee to confirm your identity.

How to apply for the CNI online
Apply for your CNI on the portal or through the GOV.CV app and follow these steps:
Choose the request type
Standard or urgent
Choose the delivery method
Collection at service desk or postal delivery
Attach the documents
Attach the applicable documents
Collect biometric data
Take a photograph and register your signature in the Biometrics GOV.CV app
Complete the request
Review and, if necessary, edit the information before submitting the request
Make the payment
Pay simply and securely through digital payment methods
- After making the payment, you must schedule a video conference so that the service staff can verify your identity.
- In your GOV.CV account, click on "Schedule video conference" to choose the most convenient day and time for you. This step is mandatory to complete the request.
Track the request
Track the status of your request in the "My requests" area, available on the portal or in the GOV.CV app.
